Investors three-year losses continue as Tiangong International (HKG:826) dips a further 7.9% this week, earnings continue to decline
Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. Long term Tiangong International Company Limited (HKG:826) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. So they might be feeling emotional about the 62% share price collapse, in that time. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 29% lower in that time. The last week also saw the share price slip down another 7.9%.
With the stock having lost 7.9% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, Tiangong International's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 20% each year. The share price decline of 28% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Tiangong International the TSR over the last 3 years was -59%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Tiangong International had a tough year, with a total loss of 27% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 16%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
