Insufficient Growth At Fufeng Group Limited (HKG:546) Hampers Share Price
When close to half the companies in Hong Kong have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 11x, you may consider Fufeng Group Limited (HKG:546) as a highly attractive investment with its 4.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Fufeng Group could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Fufeng Group would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 21%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 218% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 4.3% each year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 12% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Fufeng Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Fufeng Group's P/E
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Fufeng Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
