Insufficient Growth At Dragon Mining Limited (HKG:1712) Hampers Share Price
Dragon Mining Limited's (HKG:1712) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.5x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Hong Kong, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 13x and even P/E's above 27x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Dragon Mining has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Dragon Mining, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. How Is Dragon Mining's Growth Trending?
Dragon Mining's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 61% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 27% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that Dragon Mining's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
What We Can Learn From Dragon Mining's P/E?
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Dragon Mining maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
