Cheerwin Group (HKG:6601) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Cheerwin Group Limited (HKG:6601) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of July to CN¥0.0739. This will take the annual payment to 5.8% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.
Cheerwin Group's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. The last payment made up 80% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 7.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 104%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.

Cheerwin Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, the dividend has been unstable but with a relatively short history, we think it may be a bit early to draw conclusions about long term dividend sustainability. The dividend has gone from an annual total of CN¥0.044 in 2021 to the most recent total annual payment of CN¥0.122. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 29% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. In the last five years, Cheerwin Group's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 4.0% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.
Our Thoughts On Cheerwin Group's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
