Is Now The Time To Put China Resources Beer (Holdings) (HKG:291) On Your Watchlist?
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like China Resources Beer (Holdings) (HKG:291). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

China Resources Beer (Holdings)'s Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, China Resources Beer (Holdings)'s EPS has grown 21% each year, compound, over three years. So it's not surprising to see the company trades on a very high multiple of (past) earnings.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. China Resources Beer (Holdings)'s EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Are China Resources Beer (Holdings) Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a HK$211b company like China Resources Beer (Holdings). But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they hold CN¥97m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 0.05% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Does China Resources Beer (Holdings) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that China Resources Beer (Holdings) has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. One of Buffett's considerations when discussing businesses is if they are capital light or capital intensive. Generally, a company with a high return on equity is capital light, and can thus fund growth more easily. So you might want to check this graph comparing China Resources Beer (Holdings)'s ROE with industry peers (and the market at large).
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
