What Success Universe Group Limited's (HKG:487) 28% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Success Universe Group Limited (HKG:487) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the last month did very little to improve the 58% share price decline over the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.8x, you may consider Success Universe Group as a stock probably not worth researching with its 2.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Success Universe Group Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Success Universe Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Success Universe Group?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Success Universe Group's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 24%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 84% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 42% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we find it concerning that Success Universe Group is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

Success Universe Group's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Success Universe Group revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
