Meituan (HKG:3690) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Meituan's (HKG:3690) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Meituan, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = CN¥28b ÷ (CN¥286b - CN¥95b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Therefore, Meituan has an ROCE of 15%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 7.0% generated by the Hospitality industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
The fact that Meituan is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's earning 15% which is a sight for sore eyes. Not only that, but the company is utilizing 102% more capital than before, but that's to be expected from a company trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
The Key Takeaway
Overall, Meituan gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 52% return over the last five years. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
