Minsheng Education Group Company Limited (HKG:1569) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 13% in the last month. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. Truth be told the share price declined 27% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Minsheng Education Group actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 4.8% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.

It's pretty reasonable to suspect the market was previously to bullish on the stock, and has since moderated expectations. However, taking a look at other business metrics might shed a bit more light on the share price action.

Revenue is actually up 32% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Minsheng Education Group further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Over the last year, Minsheng Education Group shareholders took a loss of 6.4%, including dividends. In contrast the market gained about 12%. Of course the long term matters more than the short term, and even great stocks will sometimes have a poor year. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 8% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last three years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Minsheng Education Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
