Passive investing in an index fund is a good way to ensure your own returns roughly match the overall market. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Investors in TIL Enviro Limited (HKG:1790) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 13%. That falls noticeably short of the market return of around 11%. TIL Enviro may have better days ahead, of course; we've only looked at a one year period. The share price has dropped 22% in three months.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Unfortunately TIL Enviro reported an EPS drop of 17% for the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 13% the share price fall. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

While TIL Enviro shareholders are down 13% for the year, the market itself is up 11%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. It's worth noting that the last three months did the real damage, with a 22% decline. This probably signals that the business has recently disappointed shareholders - it will take time to win them back. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
