There's no doubt that investing in the stock market is a truly brilliant way to build wealth. But if you choose that path, you're going to buy some stocks that fall short of the market. For example, the Impro Precision Industries Limited (HKG:1286), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 12% trails the market return. Impro Precision Industries hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year Impro Precision Industries saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While some may see this as temporary, we're a skeptical bunch, and so we're a little surprised to see the share price go up. We might get a clue to explain the share price move by looking to other metrics.

We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.4% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Unfortunately Impro Precision Industries' fell 18% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for Impro Precision Industries in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Impro Precision Industries, it has a TSR of 15% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're happy to report that Impro Precision Industries are up 15% over the year (even including dividends). While it's always nice to make a profit on the stock market, we do note that the TSR was no better than the broader market return of about 22%. However, that falls short of the 47% gain it has made, for shareholders, in the last three months. It's worth taking note when returns accelerate, as it can indicate positive change in the underlying business, and winners often keep winning. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Impro Precision Industries has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit concerning) we think you should know about.
