Dah Sing Banking Group's (HKG:2356) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Dah Sing Banking Group Limited (HKG:2356) will increase its dividend on the 21st of September to HK$0.10. This takes the annual payment to 4.1% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Dah Sing Banking Group's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Based on the last payment, Dah Sing Banking Group was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 7.6%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 26% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least 1 cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from HK$0.40 in 2011 to the most recent annual payment of HK$0.32. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 2.2% per year. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's not great to see that Dah Sing Banking Group's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 4.0% per year over the past five years. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Dah Sing Banking Group is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
