Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Minth Group Limited (HKG:425) Even After 27% Share Price Boost
Minth Group Limited (HKG:425) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 40% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in Hong Kong have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 9x, you may still consider Minth Group as an attractive investment with its 6.7x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Minth Group has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Minth Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 20% last year. As a result, it also grew EPS by 7.2% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 18% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Minth Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From Minth Group's P/E?
Minth Group's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of Minth Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
