0.4% earnings growth over 3 years has not materialized into gains for Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme (ATH:PRODEA) shareholders over that period
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme (ATH:PRODEA) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 32% in three years, versus a market return of about 141%.
After losing 3.3% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 1.1% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
It looks to us like the market was probably too optimistic around growth three years ago. But it's possible a look at other metrics will be enlightening.
Given the healthiness of the dividend payments, we doubt that they've concerned the market. It's good to see that Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme has increased its revenue over the last three years. But it's not clear to us why the share price is down. It might be worth diving deeper into the fundamentals, lest an opportunity goes begging.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme, it has a TSR of -17% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme had a tough year, with a total loss of 2.8% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 50%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.8% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Prodea Real Estate Investment Company Société Anonyme has 4 warning signs (and 3 which don't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
