It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Gr. Sarantis S.A. (ATH:SAR).

What Is Insider Selling?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

Gr. Sarantis Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by Vice Chairman & CEO Kyriakos Sarantis was not the only time they bought Gr. Sarantis shares this year. Earlier in the year, they paid €8.15 per share in a €571k purchase. That implies that an insider found the current price of €9.02 per share to be enticing. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 291.00k shares worth €1.2m. But they sold 181.50k shares for €1.6m. In total, Gr. Sarantis insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. They sold for an average price of about €8.71. It's not too encouraging to see that insiders have sold at below the current price. Since insiders sell for many reasons, we wouldn't put too much weight on it. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below.
