The board of Spectris plc (LON:SXS) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 4.8% on the 11th of November to £0.241, up from last year's comparable payment of £0.23. This makes the dividend yield 2.5%, which is above the industry average.

Spectris' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. The last payment was quite easily covered by earnings, but it made up 140% of cash flows. The company might be more focused on returning cash to shareholders, but paying out this much of its cash flow could expose the dividend to being cut in the future.

EPS is set to fall by 9.7% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 45%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Spectris Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.291 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.718. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 9.5% over that duration. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. It's encouraging to see that Spectris has been growing its earnings per share at 82% a year over the past five years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Spectris could prove to be a strong dividend payer.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Spectris is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
