Solid State's (LON:SOLI) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

The board of Solid State plc (LON:SOLI) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of £0.1325 on the 5th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This takes the dividend yield to 1.8%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Solid State's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. However, Solid State's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 109.8%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 43%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Solid State Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was £0.08, compared to the most recent full-year payment of £0.195. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.3% per annum over that time. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.

Solid State May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, things aren't all that rosy. In the last five years, Solid State's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 3.9% per annum. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.

An additional note is that the company has been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 32% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.

Our Thoughts On Solid State's Dividend

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payments look sustainable for now, earnings have been shrinking so the dividend could come under pressure in the future. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
