Aferian's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Based on the last dividend, Aferian is earning enough to cover the payment, but the it makes up 203% of cash flows. While the company may be more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business at this time, we think that a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 6.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 34%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from US$0.031 in 2012 to the most recent annual payment of US$0.057. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.5% a year over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Aferian might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

Aferian Could Grow Its Dividend

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. We are encouraged to see that Aferian has grown earnings per share at 8.4% per year over the past five years. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.

The company has also been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 12% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.

In Summary

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Aferian's payments are rock solid. While the low payout ratio is redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
