Unfortunately for some shareholders, the ZOO Digital Group plc (LON:ZOO) share price has dived 33% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 71% loss during that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, ZOO Digital Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Software industry in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.9x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How ZOO Digital Group Has Been Performing

ZOO Digital Group could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think ZOO Digital Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ZOO Digital Group's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 22%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 6.5% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 9.1%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it odd that ZOO Digital Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Key Takeaway

ZOO Digital Group's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Software companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

ZOO Digital Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.

You need to take note of risks, for example - ZOO Digital Group has 4 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
