Pulsar Group plc's (LON:PULS) Shares Bounce 37% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry

The Pulsar Group plc (LON:PULS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 37%. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 3.9% over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Pulsar Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United Kingdom have P/S ratios greater than 2.7x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Pulsar Group Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Pulsar Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Pulsar Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Pulsar Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Pulsar Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.0%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 227% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 4.7% each year as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 13% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Pulsar Group's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Despite Pulsar Group's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Pulsar Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
