Should You Be Adding iomart Group (LON:IOM) To Your Watchlist Today?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like iomart Group (LON:IOM). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is iomart Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. Over twelve months, iomart Group increased its EPS from UK£0.12 to UK£0.13. That amounts to a small improvement of 5.4%.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). On the one hand, iomart Group's EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So if EBIT margins can stabilize, this top-line growth should pay off for shareholders.

Are iomart Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

We haven't seen any insiders selling iomart Group shares, in the last year. So it's definitely nice that Independent Non-Executive Director Richard Maurice Masters bought UK£21k worth of shares at an average price of around UK£3.55.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that iomart Group insiders have a valuable investment in the business. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at UK£61m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That holding amounts to 16% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.

While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the pretty picture. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Angus MacSween is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like iomart Group with market caps between UK£156m and UK£626m is about UK£710k.

The iomart Group CEO received UK£618k in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.

Should You Add iomart Group To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of iomart Group is that it is growing profits. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. That makes the company a prime candidate for my watchlist - and arguably a research priority. Still, you should learn about the 1 warning sign we've spotted with iomart Group .
