Returns Are Gaining Momentum At DFS Furniture (LON:DFS)

Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, DFS Furniture (LON:DFS) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for DFS Furniture, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.11 = UK£72m ÷ (UK£984m - UK£331m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).

Therefore, DFS Furniture has an ROCE of 11%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Specialty Retail industry average of 12%.

In regards to capital employed, DFS Furniture is using 24% less capital than it was five years ago, which on the surface, can indicate that the business has become more efficient at generating these returns. This could potentially mean that the company is selling some of its assets.

What We Can Learn From DFS Furniture's ROCE

From what we've seen above, DFS Furniture has managed to increase it's returns on capital all the while reducing it's capital base. Since the stock has only returned 1.6% to shareholders over the last five years, the promising fundamentals may not be recognized yet by investors.
