Insiders Give Up UK£16k As Mothercare Stock Drops To UK£0.034
The recent price decline of 16% in Mothercare plc's (LON:MTC) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought UK£47.3k worth of shares at an average price of UK£0.05 in the past 12 months. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth UK£31.8k, which is not what they expected.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Mothercare
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Non-Executive Chairman Clive Whiley for UK£47k worth of shares, at about UK£0.05 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of UK£0.034. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Clive Whiley.

Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Mothercare insiders own about UK£2.9m worth of shares. That equates to 15% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
