Panther Securities PLC (LON:PNS) announced strong profits, but the stock was stagnant. Our analysis suggests that this might be because shareholders have noticed some concerning underlying factors.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Importantly, our data indicates that Panther Securities' profit received a boost of UK£2.6m in unusual items, over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Panther Securities had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to December 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Panther Securities' Profit Performance

As previously mentioned, Panther Securities' large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Panther Securities' underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. But at least holders can take some solace from the 52% EPS growth in the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. For example, Panther Securities has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
