tinyBuild, Inc's (LON:TBLD) 25% Jump Shows Its Popularity With Investors
tinyBuild, Inc (LON:TBLD) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 25% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
Following the firm bounce in price, tinyBuild's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 61.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 16x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
tinyBuild certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like tinyBuild's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 57%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 131% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 34% each year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 12% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why tinyBuild is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On tinyBuild's P/E
tinyBuild's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that tinyBuild maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
