System1 Group's (LON:SYS1) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
System1 Group PLC (LON:SYS1) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 17th of October to £0.11. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.
System1 Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, System1 Group was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 42.2% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 22% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of £0.043 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of £0.055. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.5% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. System1 Group has impressed us by growing EPS at 42% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
System1 Group Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that System1 Group is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
