Here's Why I Think Frontier Developments (LON:FDEV) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Frontier Developments (LON:FDEV). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Frontier Developments Increasing Earnings Per Share?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Frontier Developments has grown EPS by 53% per year, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Frontier Developments shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 19% to 21%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Frontier Developments Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.
Like a sturdy phalanx Frontier Developments insiders have stood united by refusing to sell shares over the last year. But the bigger deal is that the Non-Executive Chairman, David Gammon, paid UK£52k to buy shares at an average price of UK£10.45.
On top of the insider buying, we can also see that Frontier Developments insiders own a large chunk of the company. Actually, with 39% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. And that holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling UK£156m. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!
While insiders already own a significant amount of shares, and they have been buying more, the good news for ordinary shareholders does not stop there. The cherry on top is that the CEO, David Braben is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Frontier Developments with market caps between UK£153m and UK£610m is about UK£620k.
Frontier Developments offered total compensation worth UK£407k to its CEO in the year to May 2018. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Should You Add Frontier Developments To Your Watchlist?
Frontier Developments's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The company can also boast of insider buying, and reasonable remuneration for the CEO. It could be that Frontier Developments is at an inflection point, given the EPS growth. If so, then it the potential for further gains probably merit a spot on your watchlist. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Frontier Developments by focusing on just these factors, oryou could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. So if you like the sound of Frontier Developments, you'll probably love this freelist of growing companies that insiders are buying.
