There's No Escaping AltynGold plc's (LON:ALTN) Muted Earnings Despite A 27% Share Price Rise

AltynGold plc (LON:ALTN) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 228% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in the United Kingdom have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 17x, you may still consider AltynGold as a highly attractive investment with its 5.5x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Our free stock report includes 2 warning signs investors should be aware of before investing in AltynGold. Read for free now.

With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, AltynGold has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For AltynGold?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as AltynGold's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 133%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 44% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 18% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's understandable that AltynGold's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

The Bottom Line On AltynGold's P/E

Shares in AltynGold are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of AltynGold revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 2 warning signs for AltynGold that you should be aware of.
