AltynGold plc (LON:ALTN) Soars 38% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
AltynGold plc (LON:ALTN) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 38% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in the United Kingdom have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 16x, you may still consider AltynGold as a highly attractive investment with its 3.9x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at AltynGold over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

AltynGold's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 14%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 268% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 16% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's peculiar that AltynGold's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Final Word
AltynGold's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of AltynGold revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
