We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

So should Zanaga Iron Ore (LON:ZIOC) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

How Long Is Zanaga Iron Ore's Cash Runway?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Zanaga Iron Ore last reported its balance sheet in June 2021, it had zero debt and cash worth US$765k. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$447k. So it had a cash runway of approximately 21 months from June 2021. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Is Zanaga Iron Ore's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Because Zanaga Iron Ore isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. The 55% reduction in its cash burn over the last twelve months may be good for protecting the balance sheet but it hardly points to imminent growth. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Zanaga Iron Ore due to its lack of significant operating revenues. So we'd generally prefer stocks from this list of stocks that have analysts forecasting growth.

How Easily Can Zanaga Iron Ore Raise Cash?

While we're comforted by the recent reduction evident from our analysis of Zanaga Iron Ore's cash burn, it is still worth considering how easily the company could raise more funds, if it wanted to accelerate spending to drive growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Zanaga Iron Ore has a market capitalisation of US$21m and burnt through US$447k last year, which is 2.1% of the company's market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.

So, Should We Worry About Zanaga Iron Ore's Cash Burn?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Zanaga Iron Ore's cash burn. For example, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap suggests that the company is on a good path. Its cash runway wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging!
