With EPS Growth And More, Byotrol (LON:BYOT) Is Interesting

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Byotrol (LON:BYOT). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Byotrol Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Byotrol's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Byotrol's EPS shot from UK£0.0013 to UK£0.0022, over the last year. You don't see 70% year-on-year growth like that, very often. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Byotrol shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from -2.4% to 9.1%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Byotrol isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of UK£20m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Byotrol Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations under UK£151m, like Byotrol, the median CEO pay is around UK£243k.

Byotrol offered total compensation worth UK£159k to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Should You Add Byotrol To Your Watchlist?

Byotrol's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. Such fast EPS growth makes me wonder if the business has hit an inflection point (and I mean the good kind.) At the same time the reasonable CEO compensation reflects well on the board of directors. So Byotrol looks like it could be a good quality growth stock, at first glance. That's worth watching.
