Improved Earnings Required Before Lancashire Holdings Limited (LON:LRE) Shares Find Their Feet

Published
LSE:LRE

When close to half the companies in the United Kingdom have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 17x, you may consider Lancashire Holdings Limited (LON:LRE) as a highly attractive investment with its 5.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times have been advantageous for Lancashire Holdings as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

LSE:LRE Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry December 4th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Lancashire Holdings' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Lancashire Holdings' Growth Trending?

Lancashire Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 221% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 370% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 8.0% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 13% each year, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that Lancashire Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

What We Can Learn From Lancashire Holdings' P/E?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Lancashire Holdings maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Lancashire Holdings (1 is potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
