While it’s been a great week for B.P. Marsh & Partners PLC's (LON:BPM) shareholders after the stock gained 10%, they should consider it with a grain of salt. Although prices were relatively low, insiders chose to sell UK£1.7m worth of stock in the past 12 months. This could be a sign of impending weakness.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, however we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

B.P. Marsh & Partners Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman, Brian Marsh, for UK£1.6m worth of shares, at about UK£2.97 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of UK£4.26, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 3.7% of Brian Marsh's stake.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 8.88k shares worth UK£31k. On the other hand they divested 556.86k shares, for UK£1.7m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of B.P. Marsh & Partners shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year.
