It is doubtless a positive to see that the The Rank Group Plc (LON:RNK) share price has gained some 46% in the last three months. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Looking back five years, both Rank Group's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 30% per year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 14% compound annual share price fall. So investors might expect EPS to bounce back -- or they may have previously foreseen the EPS decline. The high P/E ratio of 52.71 suggests that shareholders believe earnings will grow in the years ahead.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Rank Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Rank Group's TSR of was a loss of 45% for the 5 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 2.5% in the twelve months, Rank Group shareholders did even worse, losing 52%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Rank Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
