Munic S.A. (EPA:ALMUN) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks After Plunging 26%

Munic S.A. (EPA:ALMUN) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 27% share price drop.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Munic's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S in France's Communications industry is similar at about 0.8x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Munic's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times haven't been great for Munic as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to begin matching the rest of the industry, which has kept the P/S from declining. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping it doesn't keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Munic's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 30%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 19% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 56% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 11%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's curious that Munic's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Munic's P/S?

Following Munic's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Munic currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
