Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. And in light of that, the trends we're seeing at SII's (EPA:SII) look very promising so lets take a look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for SII:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.29 = €80m ÷ (€552m - €278m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
Therefore, SII has an ROCE of 29%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the IT industry average of 13%.

How Are Returns Trending?
Investors would be pleased with what's happening at SII. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 29%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 75%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
On a side note, SII's current liabilities are still rather high at 50% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Bottom Line On SII's ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what SII has. And a remarkable 132% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
