We Like Planisware SAS' (EPA:PLNW) Earnings For More Than Just Statutory Profit

The market seemed underwhelmed by last week's earnings announcement from Planisware SAS (EPA:PLNW) despite the healthy numbers. We did some digging, and we think that investors are missing some encouraging factors in the underlying numbers.

Zooming In On Planisware SAS' Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".

Over the twelve months to June 2024, Planisware SAS recorded an accrual ratio of -0.46. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. In fact, it had free cash flow of €45m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of €39.1m. Planisware SAS' free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see. Having said that, there is more to the story. The accrual ratio is reflecting the impact of unusual items on statutory profit, at least in part.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Planisware SAS' profit was reduced by unusual items worth €5.8m in the last twelve months, and this helped it produce high cash conversion, as reflected by its unusual items. In a scenario where those unusual items included non-cash charges, we'd expect to see a strong accrual ratio, which is exactly what has happened in this case. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Planisware SAS doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.

Our Take On Planisware SAS' Profit Performance

Considering both Planisware SAS' accrual ratio and its unusual items, we think its statutory earnings are unlikely to exaggerate the company's underlying earnings power. After considering all this, we reckon Planisware SAS' statutory profit probably understates its earnings potential! Obviously, we love to consider the historical data to inform our opinion of a company. But it can be really valuable to consider what other analysts are forecasting. At Simply Wall St, we have analyst estimates which you can view by clicking here.

After our examination into the nature of Planisware SAS' profit, we've come away optimistic for the company. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
