If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But Fiducial Real Estate SA (EPA:ORIA) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 31% over five years, which is below the market return. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Fiducial Real Estate's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Fiducial Real Estate's TSR of 36% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

Fiducial Real Estate shareholders are down 12% for the year, but the market itself is up 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
