Genfit S.A. (EPA:GNFT) shareholders will have a reason to smile today, with the analysts making substantial upgrades to this year's statutory forecasts. The consensus estimated revenue numbers rose, with their view now clearly much more bullish on the company's business prospects.

Following the upgrade, the consensus from five analysts covering Genfit is for revenues of €18m in 2022, implying a painful 81% decline in sales compared to the last 12 months. Before the latest update, the analysts were foreseeing €15m of revenue in 2022. It looks like there's been a clear increase in optimism around Genfit, given the substantial gain in revenue forecasts.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 96% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2022. That is a notable change from historical growth of 51% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 32% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Genfit is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away from this upgrade is that analysts lifted their revenue estimates for this year. They're also anticipating slower revenue growth than the wider market. Seeing the dramatic upgrade to this year's forecasts, it might be time to take another look at Genfit.
