Derichebourg SA's (EPA:DBG) Stock On An Uptrend: Could Fundamentals Be Driving The Momentum?
Derichebourg (EPA:DBG) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 112% over the last three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Derichebourg's ROE today.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Derichebourg is:
4.3% = €22m ÷ €524m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every €1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of €0.04.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
A Side By Side comparison of Derichebourg's Earnings Growth And 4.3% ROE
On the face of it, Derichebourg's ROE is not much to talk about. However, its ROE is similar to the industry average of 4.6%, so we won't completely dismiss the company. Even so, Derichebourg has shown a fairly decent growth in its net income which grew at a rate of 7.3%. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Derichebourg's growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 0.3% in the same period, which is great to see.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is DBG fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Derichebourg Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
While the company did pay out a portion of its dividend in the past, it currently doesn't pay a dividend. We infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.
Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company over the next three years is expected to be approximately 36%. However, Derichebourg's ROE is predicted to rise to 13% despite there being no anticipated change in its payout ratio.
Summary
Overall, we feel that Derichebourg certainly does have some positive factors to consider. With a high rate of reinvestment, albeit at a low ROE, the company has managed to see a considerable growth in its earnings. That being so, the latest analyst forecasts show that the company will continue to see an expansion in its earnings.
