Some Confidence Is Lacking In Vaisala Oyj's (HEL:VAIAS) P/E
Vaisala Oyj's (HEL:VAIAS) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 31.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Finland, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 13x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Vaisala Oyj has been doing quite well of late. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Vaisala Oyj's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 28% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 41% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 15% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be similar to the 15% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that Vaisala Oyj is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Vaisala Oyj currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
