Neste Oyj (HEL:NESTE) Ticks All The Boxes When It Comes To Earnings Growth
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Neste Oyj (HEL:NESTE). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Neste Oyj Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's easy to see why many investors focus in on EPS growth. In previous twelve months, Neste Oyj's EPS has risen from €2.31 to €2.46. That's a fair increase of 6.5%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While Neste Oyj did well to grow revenue over the last year, EBIT margins were dampened at the same time. If EBIT margins are able to stay balanced and this revenue growth continues, then we should see brighter days ahead.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Neste Oyj.
Are Neste Oyj Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a €33b company like Neste Oyj. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. To be specific, they have €39m worth of shares. This considerable investment should help drive long-term value in the business. Despite being just 0.1% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Neste Oyj, with market caps over €7.3b, is around €3.0m.
Neste Oyj's CEO took home a total compensation package of €731k in the year prior to December 2022. That looks like a modest pay packet, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Should You Add Neste Oyj To Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, Neste Oyj is a growing business, which is encouraging. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for Neste Oyj, but the fun does not stop there.
