The board of Prim, S.A. (BME:PRM) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 23rd of December, with investors receiving €0.1053 per share. This will take the annual payment to 3.3% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.
Prim's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, Prim's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 53.0% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was €0.531, compared to the most recent full-year payment of €0.449. The dividend has shrunk at around 1.7% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Prim Could Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Prim has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 9.4% per annum. Prim definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.
Prim Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
