We Believe That Infortar's (TAL:INF1T) Weak Earnings Are A Good Indicator Of Underlying Profitability
Infortar AS' (TAL:INF1T) weak earnings were disregarded by the market. Despite the market responding positively, we think that there are several concerning factors that investors should be aware of.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Importantly, our data indicates that Infortar's profit received a boost of €152m in unusual items, over the last year. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. We can see that Infortar's positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2024. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit a poor guide to underlying earnings power.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Infortar received a tax benefit of €31m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth. While we think it's good that the company has booked a tax benefit, it does mean that there's every chance the statutory profit will come in a lot higher than it would be if the income was adjusted for one-off factors.
Our Take On Infortar's Profit Performance
In the last year Infortar received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. And on top of that, it also saw an unusual item boost its profit, suggesting that next year might see a lower profit number, if these events are not repeated. Considering all this we'd argue Infortar's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
