Investors three-year losses continue as secunet Security Networks (ETR:YSN) dips a further 6.2% this week, earnings continue to decline
Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But long term secunet Security Networks Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:YSN) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Unfortunately, they have held through a 64% decline in the share price in that time. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 43% in the last year. Furthermore, it's down 15% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
After losing 6.2% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, secunet Security Networks' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 6.0% each year. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 29% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 4.3% in the last year, secunet Security Networks shareholders lost 42% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
