The Platform Group AG's (ETR:TPG) Share Price Boosted 29% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
The Platform Group AG (ETR:TPG) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 46%.
Even after such a large jump in price, Platform Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 19x and even P/E's above 36x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Platform Group hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Platform Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 10% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 2.3% per annum as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 16% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Platform Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Platform Group's P/E?
Platform Group's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Platform Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Platform Group, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
