The Verve Group SE (ETR:M8G) share price has had a bad week, falling 10%. Despite this, the stock is a strong performer over the last year, no doubt about that. During that period, the share price soared a full 225%. So we think most shareholders won't be too upset about the recent fall. More important, going forward, is how the business itself is going.

While the stock has fallen 10% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Verve Group went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Verve Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 225% over one year. That's better than the annualised return of 21% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper.
