Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Scout24 SE's (ETR:G24) P/E Ratio
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 28x Scout24 SE (ETR:G24) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Germany have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Scout24 certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Scout24's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 32% gain to the company's bottom line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 156% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 11% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 26%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that Scout24 is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Final Word
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Scout24's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
