Even after rising 8.0% this past week, Verbio (ETR:VBK) shareholders are still down 77% over the past three years
Every investor on earth makes bad calls sometimes. But you want to avoid the really big losses like the plague. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of Verbio SE (ETR:VBK); the share price is down a whopping 78% in the last three years. That would be a disturbing experience. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 51% in the last year. But it's up 8.0% in the last week.
The recent uptick of 8.0% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the three years that the share price declined, Verbio's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective
Verbio shareholders are down 50% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 20%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 1.6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Verbio is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
