Why You Should Care About CEWE Stiftung KGaA's (ETR:CWC) Strong Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So, when we ran our eye over CEWE Stiftung KGaA's (ETR:CWC) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for CEWE Stiftung KGaA, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.22 = €84m ÷ (€488m - €109m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
So, CEWE Stiftung KGaA has an ROCE of 22%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Commercial Services industry average of 10%.

How Are Returns Trending?
In terms of CEWE Stiftung KGaA's history of ROCE, it's quite impressive. The company has employed 87% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 22%. Now considering ROCE is an attractive 22%, this combination is actually pretty appealing because it means the business can consistently put money to work and generate these high returns. If CEWE Stiftung KGaA can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.
One more thing to note, even though ROCE has remained relatively flat over the last five years, the reduction in current liabilities to 22% of total assets, is good to see from a business owner's perspective. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously.
In Conclusion...
In short, we'd argue CEWE Stiftung KGaA has the makings of a multi-bagger since its been able to compound its capital at very profitable rates of return. Therefore it's no surprise that shareholders have earned a respectable 50% return if they held over the last five years. So while the positive underlying trends may be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
