Avemio AG (ETR:AV2) Soars 135% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
Those holding Avemio AG (ETR:AV2) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 135% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 58% share price decline over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Avemio's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Professional Services industry in Germany, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.8x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Avemio's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Avemio's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Avemio's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 10.0%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 8.2% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 5.8% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it odd that Avemio is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
Avemio's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
A look at Avemio's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
